Stay safe and have fun! Flag Pins give your Fourth of July a healthy dose of that great American spirit.
Independence Day, popularly known as the 4th of July, is a holiday that marks the anniversary of the United States declaring independence from Great Britain in 1776. Celebrated with flag lapel pins, picnics, barbecues, parades and carnivals, the one constant is the fireworks displays that ends the evening of celebration.
What began as a tradition of firing 13 shots for each founding colony has evolved into impressive firework shows that are both sponsored and private. Firework shows are held in many states, and many fireworks are sold for personal use or as an alternative to a public show. Over the years increasing safety concerns have led some states to ban fireworks or limit the sizes and types allowed.
The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) states that there are about 9,000 to 10,000 people treated a year for firework related injuries. Many of these injuries, if not all, could be prevented. One way that 5 out of the 50 states in the union has dealt with this is to outlaw any the personal purchasing and use of fireworks, opting instead to have the population attend organized shows in parks, schools and other public gathering places, by professionals trained to handle fireworks.
If you live in a state that allows for personal firework displays, here is a list of organizations that have put together safety awareness packets to distribute:
The National Institute On Deaf And Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD)
US Consumer Product Safety Commission, National Commission On Fireworks Safety
Prevent Blindness America.
A google search will give you all the information you need.
Other safety tips to be aware of:
1. Buy fireworks from reliable dealers.
2. Make sure you read all the directions and follow them. Fireworks are essentially explosives, so its important that you know what to do and that only adults handle them.
3. Only use outdoors.
4. Have a water source close by such as a large bucket of water and a water hose.
5. Do not allow children to play with fireworks and always have a responsible adult present.
