Blood drives and custom pins- how are these two related?
It’s not by blood, but it does all begin with you.
Due to the typically short supply of donor blood throughout the Winter months, because of holidays, travel and inclement weather, then President Richard Nixon designated the month of January as National Blood Donor Month. He made it clear that it was vital for all health and public educators to encourage the public at large to donate what they could. This need continues today as still every year as the Fall approaches, hospitals, clinics and public service agencies begin their campaign to educated and increase the numbers of donors that come to facilities to give blood.
“Every day in our country, approximately 39,000 units of blood are required in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities for patients with cancer and other diseases, for organ transplant recipients, and to help save the lives of accident victims.” For this reason the American Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org/), Advancing Transfusions and Cellular Therapies Worldwide (http://www.aabb.org) and America’s Blood Centers (http://www.americasblood.org) have made it their goal to help ensure that blood is available to patients whenever and wherever it is needed because it is the blood on the shelves that helps saves lives.
At this time of year hospital, medical professions, police departments, social services and other public workers will be coming together to support the efforts of this yearly campaign. Creating lapel pins or key chains using the blood donor month logo and colors is a perfect way to do this. Emblematic jewelry is visible and creates countless opportunities of dialogue which helps spread the word. The goal is to not only encourage people to give blood, but also to get first-time and regular donors to make a difference to their communities by scheduling an appointment to give blood every January, and regularly thereafter. Just one pint of blood can help save up to three lives.
To get involved, contact the American Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org/) and request the literature and logo images they have for the campaign. They have wonderful packets of information that make launching your own campaign easy and in a well organized manner. From there its a matter of designing the campaign pin or key chain that will be distributed. Help celebrate National Blood Donor Month by donating blood and encouraging others to do so as well.
