Tax day in the U.S. is the fateful day when tax returns, or statements about your income taxes, are due to federal and state governments. The official deadline is midnight, and all envelopes must be post-marked before that time to avoid penalties. TV stations across the nation cover the stories of people mailing their tax documents in the dark up until the last minute.

For those who know they cannot get their taxes done by April 15, the government offers them an option: to file an extension. That way, they’ll get another six months to get all of their W2s, receipts, and paperwork together. However, the IRS requires that you estimate the amount of the taxes due on your extension notice. The extra six months also gives procrastinators more time to save money to pay their taxes, but with some extra late fees tacked on.

In 1913, federal income tax was introduced in the U.S. to help fund WWI. Then the filing deadline was March 1, but it was changed to March 15 in 1918 and finally to April 15 in 1955, where it remains today.

On this tax-filing day, President Barak Obama said that he’s working towards a simpler tax code that rewards work and the pursuit of the American dream. “For too long, we’ve seen taxes as a wedge to scare people into supporting policies that increased their burden instead of helping them live their dreams,” Obama said.

When the president spoke, he wore a navy blue suit, white shirt, red tie, and a U.S. flag lapel pin. In fact, this president is rarely seen in public without a flag lapel pin. On his Inauguration Day in January, he wore a rhinestone-studded flag pin that glistened in the sun. And his official portrait also depicts him wearing a U.S. flag pin.
