Coin Textures
Adding texture to your custom pin or coin gives it an entirely new look.

My twin one-year-old nephews have a favorite book that they always fight over. It’s about texture and showcases swatches of dog fur, fish scales, and a cats tongue. Children at that age are very tactile, admits their father. They like fuzzy blankets, their mother’s hair, and gritty sand at the beach.

As adults, we often forget about texture, and how it can make anything more tactile and interesting. Did you know that sandblasting the background of a coin creates texture? One U.S. military unit featured a 3-D image of a wolf on its antique copper challenge coin. There was so much detail in the wolf’s face and fur that the customer didn’t want to add more to the background. So our salesperson suggested sandblasting.

One U.S. military unit featured a 3-D image of a wolf on its antique copper challenge coin. There was so much detail in the wolf’s face and fur that the customer didn’t want to add more to the background. So our salesperson suggested sandblasting.

“Sandblasting can add depth and texture, to resemble dirt, sand or gravel. And it doesn’t detract from the image in the foreground”, she said.

Sandblasting can also add contrast to coins with landscapes–or even urban landscapes. One promotions company, that was hosting an event at the John Hancock Building in Chicago, wanted to create a commemorative coin. They provided a detailed drawing of the famous building against the Chicago skyline. It showed lots of shadows, but no color.

When you have a coin without color, it’s best to have an antique finish, such as antique silver, copper or bronze, suggested our lead designer. The antiquing process will help pick up some of the shadows. Then she selected a texture from the Texture Chart to resemble the texture on artist’s rendering.

Our Texture Chart features 12 different textures that range from fine sand to coarse gravel. Some look like the crosshatches of a window screen, while others resemble a checkerboard tablecloth and an adobe tile roof.  Let us help you select the best texture for your coin!
