The difference between 2D and 3D lapel pins?

3D pins have been gaining popularity. First with the movies, then with printing and now with pins. But what is the difference between 3D pins and regular pins?  3D pins give their design a whole new perspective and character. One of the best things about 3D lapel pins is their ability to mimic life. Life isn’t 2D and neither does your logo have to be. Whether you design your pins with lettering or an image, 3D will give your pins a detailed and realistic appearance. Sculpted from the bronze or copper metals, your design will stand out. At The Monterey Company, we specialize in getting your 3D pin design down to the smallest detail. Whether you are looking to take your logo or a selected image to the next step, 3D pins will bring your design to life. In fact, if 3D movies and 3D pins had one thing in common, it would be pop. Both have the detailed power to capture their audience’s attention, arguably even more so, it seems, than their flat cousins.

Die Struck or Casting?

With limitless design options, it’s easy to create 3D pins that will fit your team or organizations style while being uniquely eye-catching. Nonprofits, sports teams, businesses, and schools also use 3D lapel pins. With so many uses at so little expense, these high-quality pins are hard to beat! Both 2d and 3d can be made by die striking your logo into either copper, brass or bronze. 3D pins can also be made using the casting process. Casting allows for your design to include really fine details or small cut-outs.

2D vs 3D Lapel Pins

There is often a question on what the difference is between a 2-D and a 3-D lapel pins. A 2-D or two-dimensional design has only 2 layers vs 3D designs. This is a great option for a text only or silhouette custom piece. With a 3-D or 3-dimensional surface, there is a full range of textures and detail that can be added. 3-D is a great option for depicting nature scenes for example, as it can provide the kind of detail that can make it almost picturesque.

3D Sculpted Pin Designs

Two-dimensional pins are made with a raised area and recessed area to achieve the details of your design. While we can sometimes add up to three levels to your design in order to achieve the desired look, 3D sculpting can add impressive elegance to your pins. 3D dies offer multiple levels of relief, not normally attainable using standard die-striking methods. Instead of only one raised area and one recessed area (as in 2D styles) this type of sculpting shows topographical contours in order to create the complex shapes and detail of animals, architectural replicas, and human faces.

3D Pins And Casting

Unlike die striking, where a preset logo is physically struck into a blank (a smooth piece of metal), 3D die cast lapel pins are produced when molten metal is poured under high pressure into a pre-created mold of your design. Pouring under high-pressure results in a clean smooth surface and a uniformly accurate final result. The dies used to create Cast 3D pins take a bit longer to make than standard 2D dies because they are more complex and are handmade. Once the pins have been poured and hardened, it is time to add the plating.
