A Comprehensive Guide to Hat Closures and Straps
What is a Hat Closure?
Hat closures are the backside of any style hat with a bill front. The closure ensures a hat stays on a person’s head while staying comfortable. Not every hat wearer has the same head, but closures help close that gap significantly.
These closures also allow for ventilation, or extra breathability for hats. On longer wears and hotter days, having the extra space in the hat helps stretch the hat’s life. Plus, no one wants to have major hat hair problems because of improper ventilation.
Types of Closures
Non-Adjustable Versus Adjustable Closures
Non-Adjustable Hat Closures
Non-adjustable hat closures are a band that encircles the bottom of a hat. This band is usually made of some sort of elastic material like nylon so that it can be slightly maneuvered for different head sizes. There are specific sizes of small/medium and large/extra large.
The most distinguishing feature of these closures is the lack of an opening, making it much more secure. Fitted hats that use non-adjustable closings tend to be made to keep sweat out of your eyes. Plenty of athletes love these hats for heavier exercise, but women with longer hair have a difficult time fitting into them.
Adjustable Hat Closures
Adjustable closures are much more about comfort. We recognize these closures for the open window above the strap on the back of the hat. Lots of ponytails live in that window!
Because so many people have different head sizes and need to have even more options for adjustable sizes. We have more options with adjustable closures mainly for options between functionality and fashion.
More Adjustable Closures
Hook and Loop Closure
Hook and Loop closures are friction-fused. There’s a soft material on the connection and a hard material on the strap side. You just apply pressure on the strap and then you’re ready to go! It makes hook and loop one of the easiest hat closures to use.
Plastic Snap Closure
We recognize plastic snap closures most on any variety of trucker hats. These closures have multiple holes on the bottom that ‘snap’ to the strap of the hat. The only caveat of plastic closures is that you can only adjust the strap so far due to the limited holes available to snap into. Because these closures are plastic though it makes for a more durable strap against the elements.
Brass Buckle Closure
Brass buckle closures are mostly used for any dad-cap-style hat. They give your custom hat a much more vintage look versus the other styles. We see these buckles either as a whole clip or a loop clip. The whole clips cover the end of the strap you adjust on the hat, and it gives the hat an elevated class. A loop clip still looks fancy, you can see the strap attachment through it.
You’re On Your Way!
You should have a much better idea on how these closures affect how your custom hat will sit and fit now. And that means you’re ready to take the next step to purchase custom hats of your own! Feel free to take a look at the options and styles that we have to offer you, and we can put you on track to making amazing fully custom hats.
